Tuhura
Home, a non-profit organisation, was
created in 2004 to provide a favourable environment
in which to address the physical, mental, spiritual
and vocational needs of destitute and/or orphaned
street children in Nepal, giving them opportunities
to enhance their growth and development.
Introduction
There are about 1000 orphanages NGOs and INGOs
in Nepal, only about 160 of which are registered
officially. For several reasons many children
are running away from home to get a better life,
and more than 1000 runaway children are living
in the capital city, Kathmandu.
There
are many reasons for the high number of orphans
and runaways in Nepal:
(a) Political
Nepal has been suffering a civil war since 1996.
More than 11,500 people have been killed in the
insurgency.
(b) Social/Cultural
Generally unmarried mothers are not accepted in
Nepal. They are vilified and shamed, and their
children are labeled with cruel and hurtful names,
yet the father of the child quite often escapes
responsibility. For this reason an unmarried mother
will often abandon her child at the hospital and
run away to avoid the shame and social ostracism.
(c) Economic
In Nepal children are considered a blessing from
the gods. Due to lack of education many families
have too many children and are unable to feed
them. Ultimately their children come to the city
to get jobs and a better life. Unfortunately,
there are no good jobs for them and they eventually
end up on the streets.
(d) Some others
reasons such as HIV/AIDS, starvation, flooding,
natural disasters, etc.
